New GI Tags For India’s Artisanal Heritage

India’s rich tapestry of traditional crafts and unique local products continues to receive formal recognition, enhancing both their domestic and international prestige. Recently, several products from diverse regions have been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, marking them as unique to their geographical origin and showcasing the unparalleled skill of the local artisans.

Odisha’s Rupa Tarakasi Earns GI Tag

The renowned Cuttack Rupa Tarakasi, a silver filigree art form that epitomizes fine craftsmanship and opulence in classical jewellery, has been honored with the GI tag by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.

This application was spearheaded by the Odisha State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation Limited with support from the Department of Textile and Handicrafts, Government of Odisha. Historical evidence indicates that filigree work, known for its intricate designs, may have been introduced to Cuttack from Persia via Indonesia around 500 years ago, reflecting a long tradition of sea trade and cultural exchange.

Banglar Muslin and More: A Celebration of Handicrafts

Joining Odisha’s Tarakasi in the list of GI tagged products is Banglar Muslin, a famed handloom craft of Bengal known for its exquisite quality and delicate weaving technique. This recognition extends to other distinguished crafts as well, including Narasapur crochet lace, Kutch rogan craft, and several others. Each of these crafts tells a story of tradition, meticulous skill, and cultural heritage, now protected and celebrated as a geographical treasure.

Expanding the GI Portfolio: From Textiles to Marble

The GI tag has also been awarded to a variety of other products that highlight the diversity of India’s geographical specialties. Among them is Ratlam Riyawan Lahsun, a garlic variety from Madhya Pradesh, and the luminous Ambaji White Marble, a testament to the geological marvels found in India.

Additionally, the Tripura Risa Textile, Hyderabad Lac Bangles, and the Assam Majuli Manuscript Painting, along with the Majuli Mask, have been recognized for their unique cultural significance and craftsmanship.

These recent additions to India’s GI tagged products not only honor the artisans and their crafts but also contribute to preserving and promoting India’s cultural heritage on a global stage.
