International Aids To Marine Navigation Organization

India was elected as the Vice President of the International Organization of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA) in Singapore on February 19, 2025. As part of its growing role in maritime safety, India will host the IALA Council meeting in December 2025 and the IALA Conference & General Assembly in September 2027 in Mumbai, reinforcing its commitment to global maritime navigation standards.

About International Organization of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA)

  • Establishment: Founded in 1957 as a non-profit international technical association and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).
  • Transition to IGO: In 2024, it officially changed its status from an NGO to an Intergovernmental Organization (IGO) following a convention ratified by 34 states.
  • Previous Name: Formerly known as the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA).
  • Motto: “Successful Voyages, Sustainable Planet.”

Objectives Of IALA

  • Maritime Safety: Promote safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of vessels.
  • Aids to Navigation (AtoN): Standardize and improve navigation aids globally.
