BRICS And Global Inaction In The West Asia Conflict

Context

  • Escalating conflict: The ongoing Iran-related conflict in West Asia has escalated with rising casualties, energy disruptions, and global security risks.
  • Weak global response: Despite the severity, the global response remains weak due to strategic hesitation and lack of coordinated leadership.
  • Source: Iran war: BRICS should step in and restrain the US and Israel, The Indian Express

Global Leadership Vacuum

  • Escalating conflict: Significant loss of lives and rising instability in West Asia.
  • Weak global response: Marked by strategic ambivalence and risk aversion among major powers.
  • Leadership paralysis: Absence of coordinated action contributing to growing global disorder.

Collective Action Dilemma

  • Strategic hesitation: States reluctant to initiate action due to fear of repercussions from the United States.
  • Coordination failure: Middle powers expect leadership from major powers, while major powers hesitate due to uncertain support.
  • Result: Deadlock in global response despite widespread recognition of risks.

European Response

  • Alliance constraints: Europe unwilling to disrupt ties with the United States.
  • Limited opposition: Refusal to actively support the war but no direct condemnation of US actions.
  • Selective application: Strong invocation of international law in Ukraine conflict but restraint in the Iran case.

BRICS Response and Limitations

  • Lack of unified stance: No strong joint condemnation of US-Israel actions despite escalation.
  • Minimal response: Call for ceasefire and dialogue without attributing responsibility.
  • Credibility concerns: Gap between stated principles of sovereignty and limited concrete action.
  • Internal diversity: Member states have varying interests, limiting coordinated response.

Strategic Role of BRICS

  • Potential influence: BRICS countries possess economic and diplomatic capacity to shape outcomes.
  • Key actors: China, Russia, India, and Brazil have significant stakes in global stability.
  • Deterrence potential: Combined strength could act as a counterbalance in global power dynamics.

India’s Role as BRICS Chair

  • Leadership responsibility: India expected to mobilise BRICS members for coordinated action.
  • Strategic challenge: Aligning diverse interests of member countries.
  • Uncertainty: Doubts remain on whether members will overcome differences to act collectively.

India’s Position on Iran–Israel–US Conflict (BRICS Context)

India has adopted cautious neutrality and strategic silence within BRICS amid the escalating West Asia conflict. Despite Iran urging India, as the 2026 BRICS chair, to mobilise the grouping for a collective condemnation of US–Israeli strikes, New Delhi has refrained from pushing such a position.

Official Position

  • Consensus constraint: BRICS operates on consensus, which is difficult as members such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are directly involved in the conflict
  • Diplomatic emphasis: India has consistently called for de-escalation, restraint, and dialogue rather than military escalation
  • Institutional focus: BRICS is viewed as a non-Western economic platform, not an anti-Western security alliance

Strategic Balancing (“Tightrope”)

  • Iran linkages: India maintains strategic projects like Chabahar Port and depends heavily on the Strait of Hormuz for energy supplies
  • Other partnerships: Strong defence and technology ties with Israel and a growing strategic relationship with the United States
  • Internal BRICS contradictions: Countries such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which host US military bases, have also been targeted by Iranian strikes, making a unified position difficult

Core Constraint

India’s approach reflects the need to balance competing strategic, economic, and diplomatic interests while avoiding actions that could strain key relationships or deepen divisions within BRICS.
